Get ready to go bare this summer with perfectly hair-free waxed skin
Prickly is out. Smooth is in.
With summer just around the corner, women will be shelving their winter garb and pulling out their short skirts, shorts and tank tops. And with less layers comes the want of less hair.
But the hair removal of today is not the razor and shaving cream you had to master at 13.
These days, women - and men - are opting for an easier, longer lasting alternative.
"Waxing removes hair from the follicle so it creates a smoother look with less stubble," said Shari Smith, owner of Casablanca Day Spa in Auburn. "It not only lasts longer, it creates hair reduction, so the hair does not grow back as quickly."
Unlike shaving, waxing takes hair out from the root, and new hairs will not grow back in the waxed area for three to eight weeks.
The process is done by spreading a wax combination thinly over the skin. A cloth or paper strip is then pressed on the top and ripped off with a quick movement against the direction of hair growth. This removes the wax along with the hair and dead skin cells, leaving the skin smooth.
Another method of waxing involves hot wax, a soft wax directly applied to the skin. The wax hardens when it cools, and allows easy removal without the aid of cloths.
New hair growth in waxed areas is likely to be soft and fine, not sharp and coarse like shaved hair.
Anywhere you grow hair, you can get it waxed, Smith said.
"We have had people come in and ask for everything," she said. "If there's hair, there is wax for it."
Different treatments in the area are available for legs, bikini, eyebrows, face, neck, lips, chin, stomach and even noses.
A wax might cost you a little more than the 99-cent BIC razor and a can of cream.
